You can get the latest version of Ventrilo from the following page: http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php
Install And Configure
After installation, run Ventrilo, and click the first arrow to create a username:
Next, click the second arrow to enter the server details:
Notes:
1) Click New to create a new server on your server list for the selected username
2) Enter a generic name for the server (ie: Warheads)
3) Enter the Server info
4) Click OK to save your setings
Finally, click setup to configure the ventrilo voice options:
Notes:
1) Make sure all these check boxes are checked, and click in the box below to assign your push-to-talk hotkey.
2) Make sure Direct Sound is enabled, and the input/output devices are configured to use your sound card. Sometimes certain sound cards use different settings for the hardware input mixer than shown here. You might need to play around with these settings to get it right.
3) Click the recording input button to make sure your Windows settings are correct.
*Vista users* If you are using Vista, the sound controls may look a bit different, but the basic concept is the same.
4) If your sound card supports it, enable advanced controls.
5) Make sure the microphone is not muted. If you do not see a slider for the microphone, click properties, and enable it.
6) If you have an advanced button, click it, and enable mic boost.
7) You are now done configuring the Windows recording controls. Close the Window.
8) Click OK to save the settings.
Events
you can change the events to trigger a text-to-speech message or nothing at all instead of the default wav sounds. Also, sometimes you will get an assbag on the server that likes to abuse the text-to-speech feature for comments. Here's how I have my events set up to minimize unnecessary noise:
Vista Users
Vista Users may need to run ventrilo as an administrator in order to use the push-to-talk button while you are in-game. To do this, right-click on your Ventrilo shortcut, then go to the compatibility tab and check the box that says "Run this program as an administrator".
Linux Users
You can get ventrilo working through Wine. Here's a HOWTO guide that may help: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Ventrilo_Via_Wine
